WASHINGTON—In response to reports that the Department of Justice will appoint former FBI director Robert Mueller as special counsel to oversee the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, People For the American Way President Michael Keegan released the following statement:

“This is an important step forward in ensuring that the American people get the full story about what happened in the 2016 presidential election. However, this does not relieve congressional leaders of their responsibility to hold President Trump accountable to the law and principles of good government. Trump would like nothing more than to cover up his campaign’s misdeeds and move on with his extreme agenda, but the power of grassroots organizing and continued advocacy work forced a different outcome. This is just the beginning of unearthing the truth about what happened in our election.”
