Representatives John Conyers and Donna Edwards today introduced a proposal to amend the Constitution to reverse the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. FEC. People For the American Way President Michael B. Keegan issued the following statement:

“John Conyers and Donna Edwards should be applauded for their response to this decision. Legislation is an important part of our response to the ruling, but, as this proposal makes clear, only a Constitutional Amendment can completely fix the damage done by the Roberts Court.

“The Court’s ruling in Citizens United is a catastrophic blow to our democratic system. By opening the flood gates to virtually infinite amounts of money from corporations, the Supreme Court subverted our Constitution’s fundamental goal of creating a government of, by and for the people.

“I look forward to working with Representatives Conyers and Edwards, as well as with other members of Congress, to enact an amendment that protects the rights and liberties of individual Americans.”
