Washington, DC – As the Supreme Court begins its new term today on the traditional First Monday in October, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“This is a First Monday like no other. Today we have the tremendous joy and satisfaction of seeing the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, take her seat. Justice Jackson brings to the Court her extraordinary legal credentials and her deep commitment to civil rights. Her voice will be vital as the Court takes up cases this term that will decide the future of free and fair elections, LGBTQ+ equality, affirmative action in education, and other critical issues. At the same time, we know there is still a far-right majority on the Court poised to strike down more of our cherished rights. The world, and history, will be watching the Court for many reasons this term, and we are confident that its newest justice will meet that scrutiny with the strength and grace she has always shown.”
