People For the American Way President Ralph G. Neas urged President George W. Bush to ensure that administration responses to the recent terrorist attacks be undertaken in ways that protect the fundamental civil liberties of all Americans. Neas encouraged the President to consult with members of Congress and to support public hearings at which proposals may be carefully considered before votes are taken.

In his letter, from 9-19-2000, Neas also commended President Bush for his condemnation of those who have committed hate crimes against their fellow Americans and urged the President to call for passage of strengthened federal hate crimes legislation. “Your embrace of this needed legislation at this critical time would ensure its swift enactment into law,” wrote Neas.
