Washington, D.C.— In response to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement that the House will open a formal impeachment inquiry regarding Donald Trump, People For the American Way President Michael Keegan released the following statement:

“We are heartened by the Speaker’s decision to take the decisive step to open a formal impeachment inquiry. It is absolutely unconscionable that a United States president should abuse the power of his office to solicit a foreign government, in this case the government of Ukraine, to interfere in our 2020 election.  This claim must be fully investigated. At the same time, the House must move forward with its investigation of a range of otherpress issues involving this president: violations of the emoluments clause, contempt of Congress, and obstruction of justice.  The American people have been living for too long with the cloud of lawlessness and corruption enveloping the White House.  It’s time to clear the air, hold those responsible to account, and restore a functioning government to our country.”
