WASHINGTON, D.C. — With the tragic news and video circulating about another unarmed Black man, Ahmaud Arbery, being terrorized, shot and killed — this time by two white men who targeted the victim while he was jogging because they thought he was a burglary suspect — Senior Director of Outreach and Public Engagement Diallo Brooks released the following statement:

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of Ahmaud Arbery. We hope that Ahmaud’s family receives justice in this tragic and painful case. The senseless killing of Ahmaud underscores how broken and racist our justice system is. His murder was another egregious act that exemplifies the continued injustice imposed on Black people. When the system does not respond to daily terrorism including deadly threats of violence, anti-Black vigilantism and murders of Black people, it becomes part of that terrorism. Local authorities waited far too long to take action in this case; now that action is being taken, we strongly support the Arbery family’s call for federal authorities to step in and investigate this as a hate crime.”
