WASHINGTON, D.C.— Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decisions in Bostock v. Clayton County, Altitude Express v. Zarda and Harris Funeral Homes v. EEOC, ensuring employers cannot discriminate based on sexual orientation and gender identity, People For the American Way Executive Vice President for Policy and Program Marge Baker released the following statement:

“Today’s Supreme Court decisions, affirming that Title VII bars employers from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, are important wins for the LGBTQ community and the nation as a whole. While we recognize that no other outcome should have been possible, the fact remains that the Court has confirmed that no person should lose their livelihood because of who they are or who they love. We applaud Gerald Bostock, Donald Zarda, and Aimee Stephens, who took a stand for their rights. Regrettably, only Gerald Bostock lived to see this victory, but the courage of all three of these individuals will improve the lives of millions of people in this country. It is also now time for the Senate to take up the House-passed Equality Act to further the cause of LGBTQ equality so we can truly right the wrong of anti-LGBTQ discrimination where it still remains.”
