Washington, D.C.— As the president remains hospitalized with COVID and more members of the White House staff and Republican members of Congress continue to test positive for the deadly virus, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“What will it take for the Trump administration and Mitch McConnell’s Senate to face the reality that holding a Supreme Court hearing in the midst of this mushrooming COVID outbreak would be completely, utterly reckless? McConnell has already sent the Senate as a whole home for another two weeks because it is too dangerous for them to convene.  Forging ahead with a hearing, especially for a justice who is being put on the bench in large part to undermine the health care law, is inviting tragedy even worse than has already occurred.  The American people want elected leaders who behave in a sane, rational manner in the face of serious threats. Sadly, what we are getting instead is the height of political idiocy.”
