WASHINGTON, DC —Following the announcement that S.1, the For the People Act companion bill to H.R. 1, will be introduced as the first legislation of the new Senate, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“After four years of crises, corruption, and a disregard for our democratic process, prioritizing the For the People Act in the Senate is a momentous step toward creating the change we all want to see. This once-in-a-lifetime legislation is about putting power back in the hands of the people. The For the People Act will end the dominance of corporate money in politics and crack down on corruption and reenfranchise Black, Latino, and other historically marginalized communities by protecting and expanding the right to vote. These pro-democracy reforms are key to addressing the issues we face as a nation. The Senate must pass the For the People Act to move our country forward so that we begin to live up to our highest democratic ideals.”
