Washington, DC— Following today’s Senate confirmation of Vanita Gupta as the new Associate Attorney General of the United States, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“People For the American Way congratulates Vanita Gupta on her confirmation as Associate Attorney General with the U.S. Department of Justice. Following yesterday’s conviction of Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd, Gupta’s confirmation is especially crucial as the nation reckons with reimagining and reinventing a public safety system that works for everyone, as well as confronting the systemic racism that has excused centuries of police killings of Black people with impunity. Gupta is the best choice to be Associate Attorney General and her record of leadership on civil rights issues is unparalleled. We know Gupta will fight successfully for greater equity in our criminal legal system and for the rights and dignity of every person in America. Now the Senate must confirm nominees like Kristen Clarke to advance the staffing of the DOJ with appointees who will help pursue justice.”
