PHOENIX– This week, People For the American Way’s Latinos Vote! program received the nationally recognized Gold Pollie Award, also known as the “Oscars of Political Advertising,” for Best Radio Bilingual/Multilingual/Foreign Language Ad from the American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC) for the radio ad “El Cucuy/Abuelita,” which translates to “The Boogeyman/Grandmother.”

“El Cucuy/Abuelita,” was produced by The Colibri Collective, an Arizona-based, Latina owned firm, as a part of an effort to engage Latino voters in the swing state during the 2020 presidential election. At that time, there were an estimated 32 million eligible Latino voters nationwide and 1.2 million in Arizona representing 24 percent of all eligible voters in the state. Latino voters were the largest racial or ethnic minority participating in a presidential election. In November, 16.4 million Latino voters went to the polls nationwide, and in Arizona, Latino voters turned out in record numbers and helped turn the state blue.

“This award and last year’s election results are testaments to the power of organizing and engaging Latino voters,” said People For the American Way President Ben Jealous. “The premise of People For’s electoral work is that when we all have the ability to make our voices heard, we can change things for the entire country. We are so proud to have worked with The Colibri Collective in this endeavor and look forward to continuing this work in elections to come.”

It worked. ‘El Cucuy/Abuelita,’ didn’t just earn this award, it yielded election results that flipped Arizona blue for the first time since 1996 due to record setting turnout.”

The Pollie Awards are run by the American Association of Political Consultants. This year, the blind jury had to judge over 400 firms to determine the best and brightest voices in political communications and public affairs with over a record-breaking 2,700+ entries across 10 mediums, including television, digital, direct mail/print, radio and phones.
