Washington, D.C. – Following today’s announcement by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that she will move to form a select committee to investigate the January 6 insurrection, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Speaker Pelosi is making the right decision by forming a select committee to investigate the January 6 insurrection. We know this was not her preference, but Republicans’ stubborn refusal to support a bipartisan commission leaves her no choice.  The American people have a right to know how a violent mob was incited and encouraged at the highest levels, and allowed to breach the nation’s Capitol. It’s critical to learn how to prevent the next attack, because we know the instigators of the last one want to strike again. We urge the organizers of the select committee to give it the full range of powers it needs to do a thorough investigation that leaves no stone unturned.”
