For the second time now, Senate Republicans have blocked critical voting rights legislation from moving forward. They have made it clear that they are actively trying to hold onto power by denying our freedom to vote.

On August 12, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous joined Stand Up America and other voting rights coalition leaders to deliver more than 400,000 signatures to the White House, urging President Joe Biden to lead on protecting voting rights by using his bully pulpit to urge the Senate to end the filibuster once and for all.

With another disastrous voting rights decision by the Supreme Court this summer, it’s clearer than ever that we will need both the voting rights protections in the For the People Act (S. 1) and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act (H.R. 4) in order to ensure that all eligible voters – especially the voters of color who are being targeted by right-wing lawmakers – have access to the ballot box.

President Biden must let nothing stand in the way of protecting our freedom to vote and ensuring fair elections. We need the Senate to end the filibuster so that robust voting rights legislation can succeed in Congress, and we need it to happen with enough time for these critical measures to be enacted before the 2022 midterms.
