A progressive advocacy organization will use text messages to encourage low-propensity Black voters to return to the polls.

People for the American Way is expanding its Defend the Black Vote project to include Ohio for 2023 and 2024, the organization announced.

“Unlike traditional campaigns targeting likely voters, People for the American Way seeks to engage with voters who rarely vote to increase overall participation,” said Roger Vann, chief strategy officer for the group.

People For the American Way President Svante Myrick said voter suppression, misinformation, and disinformation also contributes to the increase in inactive voters.

“We know these voters can be motivated by the right message at the right time, and that’s what Defend the Black Vote is all about,” Mr. Myrick said. “We’re using direct outreach to defeat the forces of voter suppression and make sure that people who have a right to vote, exercise that right – and have their votes counted.”
