Meet ALEC

He’s turning 50 this year. And for the past 50 years, ALEC has been poisoning our waters, polluting our air, denying us health care, suppressing our vote, weakening unions, empowering hate groups, enabling gun violence, attacking abortion rights, marginalizing communities of color, defunding public education and making it much, much harder to hold corporations accountable or have the rich pay their fair share of taxes.

Who is ALEC?

Well, the name stands for the American Legislative Exchange Council. That sounds pretty harmless, right? Bureaucratic. Not something to be worried about. Well, that’s the point. ALEC is a pay-to-play group that brings together some of the most extreme legislators and lobbyists who work in the shadows to corrupt the legislative process in your state.

They work in secret, in back rooms, at state Houses, in fancy restaurants and luxury resorts. They write up laws. Their members take these policies back to their state legislatures, and they couldn’t care less if that’s what we, the constituents, want. It’s what the people who fund and control ALEC want.

They rigged the system in favor of corporate power, hurting every American, left, right, or center who wants to have their voice heard and believes in a government of the people, by the people, for the people. And they’ve been attacking American democracy for over 50 years. We hate to do this, but seeing how much you’ve hurt our country, we want to wish ALEC a very unhappy 50th birthday.
