Washington, D.C. - Following today’s announcement of the Senate’s Freedom to Vote Act, a comprehensive bill to protect voting rights and strengthen our democracy, and the successor to the earlier For the People Act, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“The introduction of the Freedom to Vote Act is a monumental step forward for our democracy and the American people. This bill will counteract the rising tide of voter suppression targeting Black and brown voters, working people, and too many other communities. It will prevent partisan gerrymandering that distorts our elections and undermines the principle of one person, one vote. It will help stop billionaires from buying our elections. This bill deserves full support in the Senate and now is the time for President Biden to exert all the influence of his office to get it passed. As for the Senate filibuster standing in the way – it’s time to fix it, or nix it.”
