Washington, DC— Following Gov. Ron DeSantis’s signing of a new bill aimed at restricting voting rights in Florida, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“The Far Right is terrified by robust voter turnout, especially among Black and Brown voters. They’re doing everything they can to reinstate disenfranchisement and disempowerment of the people in an attempt to regain power. The legislation signed by Governor DeSantis is a voter suppression bill pure and simple. We should be working to give more Americans more opportunity to participate in our democracy, not implementing racist voter ID rules and criminalizing acts of kindness like giving food and water to voters in line — one of the most egregious features of a recent voter suppression law in Georgia. Enough is enough — it is time to take action. We urge the Senate to pass S1, the For the People Act, and for President Biden to sign it expeditiously.”
