Washington, D.C. – Following the filing of a federal lawsuit calling for Virginia to hold another round of House of Delegates elections, on the basis that the 2021 elections were run in accordance with a legislative district map that was not updated with the most recent census data, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“We support the call for new elections in Virginia. The last elections in the Commonwealth were based on an old, gerrymandered map that in no way reflects Virginia’s population today. Virginians deserve authentic representation in the state legislature that can only come when elections are based on a fair system of districts that fully respects the principle of one person, one vote. Virginia should move quickly to schedule new House of Delegates elections this year based on the Commonwealth’s latest redistricting. Anything less needlessly perpetuates an unfair system of representation for Virginia residents.”
