Washington D.C. – Following action by the state of Illinois to prohibit book bans in libraries and public schools, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“We applaud Illinois and Gov. Pritzker for taking the lead in defending the freedom to learn. Book banning and censorship are tools of authoritarian regimes and have no place in America. The step that Illinois is taking should be a model for the country and we hope other states will follow suit in striking a blow against bigotry and authoritarianism.”
People For the American Way has fought book banning and censorship since its inception. Read more here.
