Washington, D.C. –  Responding to reports that a number of Republican members of the U.S. House and Senate plan to formally object on January 6 to President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College win, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“This irresponsible grandstanding by Republican lawmakers, supporting Donald Trump’s baseless claims of voter fraud, should be rejected by all Americans.  Republicans can do nothing on January 6 to change the lawful outcome of November’s election — but they can do a lot to undermine public trust in the foundations of our democracy and our ability to work together to solve our nation’s problems.  Republican lawmakers need to hear from their constituents that they must respect the will of the voters, and that if they don’t, those same voters will throw them out of office at the first chance they get.”
