Washington D.C. – Following announcement of the indictment of former President Donald Trump by the U.S. Justice Department on charges related to the effort to overturn the 2020 election, which included the January 6 coup attempt at the Capitol, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:

“While every criminal indictment against Donald Trump is serious, an indictment for his role in trying to overturn the election would be the most serious so far. Trump stands alone among U.S. presidents as the only one suspected of a criminal plot to deny the peaceful transfer of power and keep himself in office. The gravity and danger of that crime are breathtaking. As grim as it is to see a former president indicted, we are very gratified that the wheels of justice are turning. We can’t say it enough: in America, no one must be above the law.”
