Washington, D.C. –  Following the reintroduction in the 117th Congress of H.R. 1, the For the People Act package of democracy reforms that first passed the House in 2019, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“The critical reforms designed to strengthen our democracy found in the For the People Act have never been more timely than they are today.  This landmark legislation gets at the heart of many systemic problems with government corruption and dysfunction at a moment of deep need for renewed confidence, trust and participation in our democracy. It protects voting rights and limits the corrosive effect of big money in politics.  It curtails partisan gerrymandering, and it closes the revolving door between big business and government. The House should pass it immediately, the Senate should follow, and President-elect Biden should sign it as soon as he assumes office.”
