WASHINGTON, D.C.— Following the passage in the House of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (H.R. 6201), focused on providing support for America’s families, People For the American Way Executive Vice President for Policy and Program Marge Baker released the following statement:

“We commend House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the House for putting families and individuals first, not Wall Street, by passing the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, a first step in recognizing the burdensome social and economic tolls that millions face during a national health care emergency. This important public health legislation prioritizes America’s health and protects everyone from further spread of the virus. These measures are not giveaways but vital supports and best practices focused on safeguarding all of us from the coronavirus, including low-wage workers, the uninsured, and communities of color who already experience racial and ethnic health care disparities, and people who might otherwise be forced to choose between a paycheck to support their families or risking exposure to the virus. Congress must pass, and the president must sign, this bill.”
