WASHINGTON, D.C.— Following today’s Supreme Court ruling permitting Donald Trump’s “public charge” immigration rule to go into effect, PFAW Political Director and Director of the PFAW Latinos Vote! program Lizet Ocampo released the following statement:

“Today’s disturbing 5-4 decision by the Supreme Court, to temporarily lift the stay on denying green cards to hardworking individuals who contribute to the social fabric and economic growth of our communities, is a clear example of how narrow-minded judges impact our everyday lives. Instead of eliminating barriers for immigrant people trying to create better lives, some Supreme Court justices, including Trump’s very own nominees, want to impose a ‘wealth test’ on immigrant families. If this policy becomes permanent, immigrant families will have to choose between food, health care and other essentials, or preserving their chance for a safer future in the U.S. It’s ironic that on this third anniversary of Trump’s travel ban against people from predominantly Muslim countries, the highest court in the land continues to allow policies that target our communities and cripple our collective prosperity.”

About Latinos Vote!

People For the American Way’s Latinos Vote! program exposes and counters anti-immigrant, anti-Latino rhetoric and policies. Through electoral work and issue-based campaigns, we hold groups, leaders and influencers accountable for the harm they do to immigrant and Latino communities. Over six election cycles, we’ve run bilingual paid and earned media campaigns in swing states where the Latino vote can be decisive.
