Washington, D.C.— Following the conclusion of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Today we heard moving personal testimony from people who are deeply fearful that Amy Coney Barrett will cast a deciding vote to overturn protections of the Affordable Care Act. We heard from a leading civil rights advocate that she is concerned about the impact a Justice Barrett would have on civil rights laws.  None of this mattered to Lindsey Graham and Judiciary Committee Republicans, who literally broke committee rules to force an initial action to move the nomination forward before these people could even speak.  The way Republicans behaved today is more proof that this nomination has everything to do with partisan politics, and nothing to do with what is best for the Court or the American people. Senators should reject this nomination.”
