In response to the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the nomination of Wendy Vitter to become a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker issued the following statement:

“At today’s hearing, Wendy Vitter did absolutely nothing to lessen concerns about her fitness for the federal bench. If anything, she gave the Senate more reason to oppose her confirmation by blatantly misrepresenting her previous remarks urging anti-choice activists to ask their doctors to distribute dangerous and factually inaccurate material about birth control. Not only did she display an obvious inability to separate junk science from real facts, she also made clear that she’s willing to mislead women about their own medical care in order to advance her ideological purposes. There’s simply no way that someone with those failings should be entrusted to a lifetime seat on the federal bench
